Pride Month: Honoring the Past, Celebrating the Present

June is Pride Month — a time to celebrate, reflect and recommit to the values of equality, dignity, and inclusion.

Every year, communities around the world come together in June for parades, events, and moments of collective joy. But Pride is more than a celebration. It is a tribute to the courage of those who came before us and a reminder of the work still ahead.

Where It All Began: The Stonewall Uprising

The roots of Pride Month trace back to a sweltering summer night in New York City. On June 28, 1969, patrons of the Stonewall Inn in Manhattan's Greenwich Village fought back against a police raid, an act of resistance that ignited a movement.

The Stonewall Riots, also known as the Stonewall Uprising, marked a turning point in LGBTQ+ history. At a time when same-sex relationships were criminalized and LGBTQ+ people were routinely targeted by law enforcement, the community stood up and said: enough. What began on that single night grew into organized advocacy, community building and the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement we know today.

One year after Stonewall, the first Pride marches were held in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago. Decades later, Pride is celebrated in cities across every continent, a testament to how far the movement has come, and how deeply its origins still resonate (BBC, 2019).

Pride Every Day at HCAI

At Health Care Advocates International (HCAI), Pride isn't something we celebrate just once a year. It's woven into everything we do.

Since 2016, HCAI has been home to Connecticut's leading LGBTQ+ and HIV providers — a practice built on the belief that every person deserves healthcare that treats the whole person, not just the diagnosis. Our team includes providers who are members of the LGBTQ+ community themselves, alongside dedicated allies who share our commitment to compassionate, stigma-free care.

When you walk through our doors, you are seen. You are respected. You belong.

Our Commitment to the Community

HCAI's work extends far beyond the exam room. Through our advocacy programs, grant initiatives, and community partnerships, we fight to dismantle the systems that too often leave LGBTQ+ individuals behind in healthcare settings. We offer:

  • LGBTQ+ Health Services — affirming care tailored to your needs

  • HIV Prevention and Treatment — because ending the HIV crisis starts at home

  • Mental Health Support — because wellbeing is about the mind as much as the body

  • Transgender Care — respectful and gender-affirming care

  • Community Pharmacy — removing barriers to treatment and ensuring continuity of care

Celebrating Pride, Together

As Pride winds down, we invite you to remember Stonewall and to remember that the fight for full equality is ongoing. It takes advocates, caregivers, friends, families, and communities all showing up together.

HCAI is proud to be part of that community. We are proud to stand with you, not just in June, but every single day.

To learn more about HCAI's services and advocacy programs, visit hcaillc.com or call us at (203) 345-0404 to schedule an appointment.

Happy Pride Month from everyone at Health Care Advocates International.
