Back to School, Be Yourself: How We Can All Support LGBTQ+ Students This Year

As backpacks get packed and school bells ring again, most kids feel the familiar mix of excitement and nerves that come with a new school year. But for many LGBTQ+ youth, the start of school carries a heavier weight, one rooted not in anticipation, but in anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about whether they'll be safe in the place where they spend most of their days.

At Health Care Advocates International (HCAI), we believe every young person deserves to walk through those school doors and feel seen, respected, and safe. That belief isn't just a statement; it's the foundation of everything we do.

The Reality LGBTQ+ Youth Face

The numbers are sobering. Recent CDC data reveals that 4 in 10 high school students experienced persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, with 2 in 10 seriously considering suicide and nearly 1 in 10 having attempted it. LGBTQ+ students face these challenges at disproportionately higher rates.

According to The Trevor Project, LGBTQ+ and transgender youth experience more bullying and violence than their peers. The stigma and discrimination they encounter, often in the very spaces meant to nurture them, make them significantly more likely to struggle with depression and other mental health challenges. These aren't abstract statistics. These are real young people who need real support.

What Schools and Educators Can Do Right Now

Creating a safer school environment doesn't require a complete overhaul, it starts with intentional, consistent actions. Here are some meaningful ways to make a difference:

Make space for pronouns. Normalizing the sharing of pronouns in class introductions, email signatures, name tags signals to students that their identity is acknowledged and respected. Using gender-inclusive language across all school settings reinforces that everyone belongs.

Be a visible ally. Sometimes the most powerful thing an educator or administrator can do is simply show up. Establishing or supporting a Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA), displaying Pride flags and inclusive posters, and enforcing clear anti-bullying policies all communicate that your school is a place where LGBTQ+ students are protected.

Build inclusion into the curriculum. Representation matters. Incorporating LGBTQ+ perspectives and history into classroom learning, stocking the school library with diverse LGBTQ+ literature, and supporting gender-affirming dress codes are all ways to weave inclusion into the daily fabric of school life.

Listen to students. LGBTQ+ youth are the experts on their own experiences. Actively seeking out and responding to student voices, and continuously pursuing education and training on LGBTQ+ issues, ensures that support evolves alongside the needs of the community.

You Don't Have to Figure It Out Alone

Schools, teachers, loved ones, you are critical parts of a young person's support system. And you don't have to navigate this alone. Whether you're a parent trying to understand what your child is going through, an educator looking for resources, or a young person who just needs to feel less alone, HCAI is here.
